Lime Green Smoothie Recipe
There are many things that tend to occur naturally in our western culture and diet, that would tip the scales more towards the acidic, so to balance things back out we need to be conscious of how much of those things we indulge in, and purposefully aim to include alkalising foods into our diet. One great alkalising vegetable is spinach. Now, before you start gagging and say “I’ll never eat spinach”, there’s a very easy way to get this powerful vegetable down your throat in a rather tasty fashion.
Spinach is a superfood. It is loaded with tons of nutrients in a low-calorie package. Dark, leafy greens like spinach are important for skin, hair, and bone health. They also provide protein, iron, vitamin C and A, magnesium, potassium, and folic acid. Studies have shown that adding just a cup of spinach to your diet each day will help aid in digestion, prevent constipation, maintain blood sugar, and even help curb your appetite if you are trying to lose weight. A cup a day can also help strengthen mucous membranes, the respiratory system, and your urinary tract, which can help fight against infections.
However, spinach is notoriously disliked so where’s the tasty part I mentioned earlier. Blending the spinach into a smoothie, accompanied by a very pleasant culinary oil –Lime—is an effective way to allow you to eat this important vegetable in a raw form and actually enjoy it! Taken internally, Lime essential oil supports a healthy digestive system and may aid in weight management, just like spinach!
To make your Lime Green Smoothie:
(Wash first! Thieves Fruit and Veggie Soak for the win here!)
Cut up and take out the core of an apple (pink lady or granny smith are good options).
Place in a blender along with a good handful of spinach leaves.
Add a couple of heaped spoonfuls of a good probiotic yoghurt (I’ve been using Jalna’s Biodynamic Organic Yoghurt, or Jalna’s Creamy Vanilla Yoghurt).
Pop 1-2 drops of Lime Essential Oil into the mix
Finish with about one cup of your choice of milk.
Blend until smooth and drink!
It’s a healthy go-to that will stave off those afternoon cravings that tend to set in before dinner is ready.
